How to talk to strangers online
Talking to someone you've never met feels awkward for almost everyone at first. The good news is that it's a skill, and a few habits make it much easier.

Starting the conversation
Open with something easy
A simple hello and a question anyone can answer works better than a clever line. Try "What are you up to tonight?" or "What's a song you've had on repeat?"
Be curious, not interrogating
Ask one question, listen, then react to what they said before asking the next. Rapid-fire questions feel like a quiz.
Share a little about yourself
Conversation is two-way. Answer your own question too, so they have something to respond to.
Keeping it going
- Pick topics you both care about: music, games, films, food, travel, studies or work.
- Follow up on details ("You said you play football, which position?").
- Use a light game or a conversation starter when it goes quiet. It's fine to say "Want to play Tic Tac Toe?"
- Silence for a few seconds is normal. You don't have to fill every gap.
Staying safe while you chat
- Keep your address, workplace, school, phone number and financial details private.
- Don't send money, gift cards or one-time codes to anyone you met online.
- Remember anything you show can be recorded by the other person.
- Be careful about moving to another app. If you do, take your time and don't share more than you'd tell a new acquaintance.
When to end the conversation
You never owe anyone a reason. If someone pressures you, asks for money or personal details, or makes you uncomfortable, leave. On kynq, tap Next person to skip, and report or block them if they broke the rules.
