Games that need no app at all

These work on any video call with nothing but a camera and a voice.

• 20 questions: think of an object, a film or a place, and let the other person ask yes-or-no questions.
• Two truths and a lie: say three things about yourself and let them guess the lie.
• Emoji or movie charades: act out a film without speaking.
• Story chain: one of you says a sentence, the other adds the next, and the story gets silly quickly.
• Show your view: each of you shows the most interesting thing within reach of your camera.

How to use a game to break the ice

Suggest it lightly. Something like a quick round of would-you-rather works better than a formal invitation, and it is fine to hear a no.

Pick games that suit the mood. Start with low-stakes ones such as this-or-that, and only move to truth-or-dare if both of you are clearly having fun.

Keep the stakes small. Nobody should have to share something personal, and you never need to share your phone number, address or college details to win a round.

When to stop playing

If the other person seems bored or keeps pushing you toward something you dislike, end the game. You can also use Next person or Leave at any time, and report a call from inside it if someone crosses a line.
