Is the Monkey app safe?

No random video chat can promise you'll never meet someone unpleasant, and that includes Monkey. This page sets out what Monkey says about itself, what independent reviewers have reported, and what we couldn't confirm, all checked on 1 October 2026.

We run kynq, a competing random video chat for adults in India, so we've kept to what's published and named the source for each point. Apps change, so check Monkey's own safety centre for the latest.

kynq: 18+ only, free to start, matches you with people in India.

The short answer

Monkey says it's for adults only and uses AI moderation. Common Sense Media, an independent reviewer, rates it 17+ ("older teens only") and raised concerns about age verification and exposure to explicit content. Treat it the way you'd treat any random video chat: it's for adults, you should keep personal details private, and you should leave the moment a chat feels wrong.

What Monkey says about itself

  • Its safety centre says it's strictly for people 18 and older.
  • It says AI detects possible underage signals during video chat or registration, that confirmed underage accounts are permanently banned, and that suspected ones are restricted and reviewed.
  • It says it uses AI to monitor live video in real time, and that you can report someone during or after a match. It says repeated explicit-content violations lead to permanent suspension.
  • Its privacy policy says it asks your age when you sign up and may use third-party age verification.
  • The same policy lists what it can collect, including your name, date of birth, email, phone number, photo, device identifiers and, with your consent, location. Deleting an account takes 30 days, and some data may be kept for legal or business reasons.

What independent reviewers report

  • Common Sense Media (updated October 2025) rates Monkey 17+, "older teens only". It says chats are largely unmoderated, can include sexual or violent content, and that age isn't verified.
  • A 2019 Washington Post analysis of more than 130,000 App Store reviews of six random chat apps found about 2% of Monkey's reviews described unwanted sexual experiences. Apple raised Monkey's age rating from 12+ to 17+ after the paper asked about it. That was in 2019, and we can't tell how much has changed since.
  • Protect Young Eyes, a child-safety group, rates Monkey as high risk for sexual content and contact from predators, and notes there are no parental controls. We couldn't confirm the date of its assessment.

What we couldn't confirm

  • Apple's App Store: we couldn't find Monkey there on 1 October 2026. Some parent-guide sites say it was removed, but we found no statement from Apple or a major news outlet on when or why, so we're not giving a reason.
  • Recording: we couldn't find a stated policy on whether chats can be recorded or screenshotted. On any service, the other person can record their own screen.
  • Legal action: we found no regulator action or court case about Monkey in our search. That doesn't mean there isn't any.
  • India: we found no ban, legal action or advisory naming Monkey in India. Check current news if this matters to you.

Staying safer on any random video chat

  • Don't share your full name, address, school or college, phone number or social media handles.
  • Don't move the chat to another app, and don't send photos or video.
  • Keep your face, uniform, ID cards and anything that shows where you live out of view.
  • Use skip, report and block freely. You never owe a stranger a reason to leave.
  • Be wary of anyone who pushes for photos, money, secrecy or to continue elsewhere. Tell a friend or family member if something feels off.
  • Only use an app that's for your age group, and never enter a false date of birth.

How kynq approaches it

kynq is for adults 18 and over in India. We ask for your date of birth before you can match, but we can't verify it against an ID, so we also rely on reports. Video and audio aren't recorded or stored by kynq, report and block are in the call controls, and someone you block is never matched with you again. None of that makes any random chat risk-free. We couldn't find a stated policy. Whatever the app does, the person you're chatting with can record their screen, so only show what you're comfortable with.
