How to protect your privacy on video chat

Check what is behind you

Your background can say a lot: a school or college ID on the wall, a nameplate, a window with a landmark, a shelf of certificates, a letter on the desk.

Before you start, look at your camera preview. Sit against a plain wall or move to a spot with nothing identifying in view. This one change removes most accidental oversharing.

Be careful with names and details

Use a first name or a nickname. Skip your surname, college, hostel, office, exact locality and phone number.

City-level details are usually fine for finding common ground. Street names, workplaces and daily routines are not something a new person needs.

• Do not read out OTPs or codes, even as a joke.
• Do not show your phone screen, bank app or notifications.
• Close other tabs and mute notifications so nothing personal pops up on screen.

Screen sharing and shared links

If any app lets you share your screen, remember that it shows everything visible: tabs, messages, file names. Share only a single window, and never with someone you have just met.

Be wary of links a stranger sends, especially ones asking you to sign in or install something.

Screenshots and recordings: the honest caveat

kynq does not record calls and does not monitor them live. But anyone on a video call can screenshot or screen-record from their own device, and we cannot stop that.

So the safest rule is to do nothing on camera you would be uncomfortable seeing shared. That keeps you in control whatever the other person does.

Use the tools built into kynq

Nobody can message you just because you matched, and friend requests need both people to agree, so you decide who gets more of your time.

If someone pushes for personal details, you can tap Next person or Leave at any time, or block them so you never match again. Reports are one tap and the other person is never told who reported.

Can I be completely anonymous on video chat?

Not completely. Your face and voice are visible to the person you are talking to, so the practical aim is controlling what you reveal: name, background and personal details.

Does kynq record my video calls?

No. Calls are not recorded or monitored live. The other person could still record their own screen, so only do what you are comfortable with.

How do I hide my background?

Sit against a plain wall or remove identifying items from view. Check the camera preview before starting the call.

What if someone asks for my number or address?
