An Omegle alternative for college students
If you're a college student in India, meeting new people outside your own circle is half the reason random video chat is appealing. After Omegle shut down, a lot of students started looking for something to replace it.
kynq is a free video chat for adults 18 and over in India. This page covers who it's for, what to watch out for, and tips that suit student life.
18+ only. Free to start, no download.
The age rule matters
kynq is for people who are 18 or older. Many students start college at 17, and if you're under 18 you can't use kynq, even if you're already at college. We ask for your date of birth before you can match. We can't verify it against an ID, so please be honest, and report anyone who seems underage.
Why students look for something like Omegle
- To talk to people from other colleges and cities, not just your own campus.
- To practise conversation, including interviews and group discussions, with someone with no stake in how you do.
- Because it's the end of a long day in the hostel and you'd like a chat with someone new.
What's different about kynq
- You're matched with someone else in India, so time zone and language are usually shared.
- It runs in the browser on your phone or laptop. There's nothing to install, which helps if your storage is full.
- You can skip, report and block in one tap, and blocked people are never matched with you again.
- Video and audio aren't recorded or stored by kynq. The other person could still record their own screen, so only show what you're comfortable with.
- There are quick games and conversation starters, so a call with a stranger doesn't have to start with an awkward silence.
Staying safe as a student
- Don't share your college, hostel, ID card, roll number or phone number, and keep them out of view of the camera.
- Keep your social media handles private until you really know someone.
- Don't move to another app or send photos or videos. If someone pushes you to, skip and report them.
- Watch your background. A college banner, uniform or hostel sign tells a stranger where you are.
- Be careful about anyone asking for money or favours. That's a red flag on any platform.
Want to represent kynq on your campus?
If you enjoy it, kynq has a campus ambassador program for students in India who are 18 or over. It's a volunteer program with goodies and Koins, not paid work.
Questions people ask
- Can I use kynq if I'm 17 and in college?
- No. kynq is for people who are 18 or older, no matter what year you're in.
- Do I need a college email?
- No. You sign in with a Google account.
- Will people from my college see me?
- You're matched with someone else in India at random, so it's possible but unlikely. Keep personal details private either way.
- Is it free for students?
- Yes, it's free to start. Some extras use Koins, which you can earn by chatting.
- Is it safe?
- No random chat can promise that. kynq has an age check, skip, report and block, and doesn't record video, but you should still keep personal details private.
